Summary

Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice。

She will reign。

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer — the master of souls。 The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice。 To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic。

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee。 She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic。

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder — and more peril — than Amora anticipated。 A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever。

I am the right choice。 The only choice。 And I will protect my kingdom。

I've been trying to shift more towards adult fiction as well as to broaden the scope of genres I read, so it's been a while since I started a new YA fantasy series。 This is a really good one, so far。 I've been trying to shift more towards adult fiction as well as to broaden the scope of genres I read, so it's been a while since I started a new YA fantasy series。 This is a really good one, so far。 。。。more

I actually really enjoyed this book。 Took me awhile to read and get through it but truly loved reading it and seeing a strong independent woman learn what is actually happening around her and see her grow!! Can’t wait for the next book!!

A book that drew me in from the start! From the moment I picked up the book, I couldn't stop reading。 One thing that I appreciated was the pacing of the book。 Every scene and event wasn't dragged out and had decent transitions, however some felt as if they got improper closure due to Amora "blacking out" or having an injury so threatening that she can't see and needed Bastian to carry her。 Scenes got hard to understand at some points because of the random injuries or fighting。 I found myself read A book that drew me in from the start! From the moment I picked up the book, I couldn't stop reading。 One thing that I appreciated was the pacing of the book。 Every scene and event wasn't dragged out and had decent transitions, however some felt as if they got improper closure due to Amora "blacking out" or having an injury so threatening that she can't see and needed Bastian to carry her。 Scenes got hard to understand at some points because of the random injuries or fighting。 I found myself reading some pages over and over again because I was confused at the descriptions。I loved Amora, and the rise and fall of her pride was something I thought was interesting。 One thing that I push for in my life is not being afraid to get help。 Amora went from having an abundance of hope, to wanting to give up, to finding strength again through her newfound crew that she adores。 This, to me, was an inspiring message, and I absolutely appreciated the heck out of it。The other characters were great too。 I felt as if their development was pretty substantial for a duology, however I hope that once I read book #2, that we get to explore more of Vataea。 A part of me really feels bad for Ferrick as well, but his ending as to his relation to Amora was comforting to read。 Bastian's secrecy kind of annoyed me in some areas but is necessary for the progression of the story and I can't wait to see how his journey continues。The plot was gripping and overall really gripping and while some things were predictable, I liked the thrill of being able to problem solve while reading the book。 It had great action and a lot of the major twists and turns of the story were shocking in an enjoyable way。 It was a different type of read for me since the books I've been reading aren't island or sea based。 It was a wonderful adventure away from my typical stories and I cannot wait to read book two! 。。。more

4。5 stars ⭐️ This book is great。 It’s a wonderful swashbuckling tale with a magnificent magic system and fantastic world building。 The characters are all enchanting in their own ways。 Amora is one of the best and fiercest female main characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading。 And the writing itself is dazzling。 There was a little chunk in the middle where I was bored but the last quarter of the book moves at a breakneck pace。 This is a truly wonderful book。

Ok so that was really disappointing。 I bought it in a hurry because I and heard only rave reviews of it on Booktok but it fell short for me。I dont know why this was described to me as an enemies to lovers it is really barely there and I was thoroughly disappointed by the romance (which seems to happened a lot to me these days) I once again felt like this happened too quickly and out of nowhere。 The plot was also pretty standard and and I had guessed the majority of it before the half of the book Ok so that was really disappointing。 I bought it in a hurry because I and heard only rave reviews of it on Booktok but it fell short for me。I dont know why this was described to me as an enemies to lovers it is really barely there and I was thoroughly disappointed by the romance (which seems to happened a lot to me these days) I once again felt like this happened too quickly and out of nowhere。 The plot was also pretty standard and and I had guessed the majority of it before the half of the book。I found the characters to be really irritating for the majority of the book and they where just not memorable。 Even the relationships between the characters were really boring。 I also didn't like how the book ended it didn't feel like it should've ended there maybe a lit sooner of way after。 I am not sure if im going to continue on with this series to be honest。 there's lots of books I want to read and this feels like a waist of my time。 I didn't like the plot nor the characters so i am probably gonna stop there。 。。。more

this reminded me why i like YA fantasy。 it's short, adventurous, fast-paced, and imaginative。 i really enjoyed this!we're taken on a sea voyage to explore the incredibly creative world of magic and it's so fun and adventurous! the main character is strong and amazing。 she's bold, clever, and confident。 she makes good decisions and keeps a level head。 she's headstrong and determined, and i love her! she's this no bullshit kind of person and she's brilliant。 she is still ofc a teenager and she has this reminded me why i like YA fantasy。 it's short, adventurous, fast-paced, and imaginative。 i really enjoyed this!we're taken on a sea voyage to explore the incredibly creative world of magic and it's so fun and adventurous! the main character is strong and amazing。 she's bold, clever, and confident。 she makes good decisions and keeps a level head。 she's headstrong and determined, and i love her! she's this no bullshit kind of person and she's brilliant。 she is still ofc a teenager and she has her flaws, but she's a really great main character overall。 anyway, the characters are compelling。 the romance is charming。 the plot is engaging。 the setting is solid。 the supporting characters are well-developed and i really like their dynamics。 it's just fantastic and entertaining, love this! 。。。more

I enjoyed this book, the world was very interesting & the magic elements were exciting! My only criticism is that I disliked the main character。 She came across quite arrogant and like a ‘pick me’ girl。 She just irritated me, and because I couldn’t connect with her I couldn’t enjoy the book as much as I might have been able to。 I thought the love interest was a bit bland, but I really enjoyed the other characters in this book。 It took me a while to get into it, but it got better as the book went I enjoyed this book, the world was very interesting & the magic elements were exciting! I enjoyed this book。 It was a very fast and light read。 I liked the plot and characters。 I really enjoyed the fact that the world is divided into islands, each with its own magic system。 I wish there was more time spent on the actual ship--since I like everything to do with the ocean--but the little time spent on the ship was fun。 I enjoyed the perspective of the main character。 There is only one POV in the book, and I liked reading about her struggles with her relationship with Bastian, her mag I enjoyed this book。 It was a very fast and light read。 I liked the plot and characters。 I really enjoyed the fact that the world is divided into islands, each with its own magic system。 I wish there was more time spent on the actual ship--since I like everything to do with the ocean--but the little time spent on the ship was fun。 I enjoyed the perspective of the main character。 There is only one POV in the book, and I liked reading about her struggles with her relationship with Bastian, her magic, and her place within society。 The other characters are fun, but I felt we didn't get to really know them except Bastian。 I really liked Ferrick, and he had some good moments, but I felt he was glossed over。 Also the relationships felt like it happened very fast and one of them happened off-screen, which made it unbelievable。 Overall, it was a fun read and I'm interested in the next book。 。。。more

I’ll start by saying that I loved this book, and have already dug into the sequel! With that being said, I found this book a little hard to get into initially。 I didn’t feel like it grabbed my attention right off the bat。 After dragging through the first 50 or so pages, I finally was hooked and couldn’t put it down!Let’s talk characters! Amora, our badass Princess! It’s hard for authors to write books anymore with truly unique, one of a kind characters。 The magic Amora possesses is just about the only unique quality she has。 But the storyline helps with the typical princess trying to save her kingdom plot! She’s a feisty little princess and I love that about her! Then there’s Ferrick, Amora’s betrothed。 He tries so hard to be the best future husband to Amora, and I gotta give him props for sticking to it even when she rudely turns him down。 He’s also a damn good healer! Then we have Bastian, the hunky pirate。 I mean who doesn’t love a pirate?? I love his resilience and determination。 He’s such a fun, lively character that of course stole my heart right away。 🖤 Last but not least, we have Vatae, our lovely and witty mermaid。 Of course she’s beautiful and can lure men to their death, but she’s also smart and funny and really pulls through for the crew! How can you not love each and every one of them?? It’s impossible!I love seafaring adventures, even when they include the cliché sea monster! The unique styles of magic and dynamic of the kingdom as a whole was very intriguing! I highly recommend reading this one for sure! Beautiful cover as well! ❤️ 。。。more

4。 This book was so fun! While I am not partial to fantasy in a sea setting, I found this super enjoyable。 I love that it was so fast-paced。 I confess though, I’m not entirely certain what happened during the last few pages。 Also since Kaven’s dead, I’m super confused as to what will happen in the second book。

There were a lot of things I didn't like about this book that just made it a chore to listen to。The plot was basic and straightforward。 If the book has strong characters and writing, it can be a simple, predictable story and still be entertaining。 This was not。 All the characters were borderline (or outright) unlikeable with no development whatsoever。 The world itself seemed complex on the surface, but there was little explanation of how things actually worked (i。e。, the magic system, which is a There were a lot of things I didn't like about this book that just made it a chore to listen to。The plot was basic and straightforward。 If the book has strong characters and writing, it can be a simple, predictable story and still be entertaining。 This was not。 All the characters were borderline (or outright) unlikeable with no development whatsoever。 The world itself seemed complex on the surface, but there was little explanation of how things actually worked (i。e。, the magic system, which is also the central plot point)。To be fair, I listened to All the Stars and Teeth immediately after finishing Fable by Adrienne Young。 I absolutely loved that story, so I may have had unfair expectations。 Perhaps if I were in a different reading mood (and didn't listen to the audiobook with poor narration), I would have enjoyed it more。I received the sequel as an ARC from Netgalley, and I plan to still give it a try! I'll just go in with different expectations。 。。。more

Overall I enjoyed the book。 I think I like books with pirates。 They’re sassy。 The twists were predictable, but that didn’t make it less enjoyable。 The ending felt rather。。。meh。。。but there is a second book so I feel like that will make up for it。 It’s just sort of all, happened? You’ll have to read it to understand。
